When a person has faith in God, it is faith in a Being who will be judge on the Judgement Day. We are accountable before Him. His angels are recording our deeds. This gives rise to ethics that make a person harmless for others. The entire world is your neighbour. Your next door neighbour is not your only neighbour. One after the other, all are your neighbours. If you have dealings with your neighbour in terms of speaking, actions or behaviour, you have to be good in conduct.
A hadith says: وأحسن إلى جارك تكن مؤمنا (Musnad Ahmad 8095) Behave well with your neighbour. You will become a believer. What is this? This is a mark of faith, a mark of a believer. Why? When a person has faith in God, it is faith in a Being who will be judge on the Judgement Day. We are accountable before Him. His angels are recording our deeds. This gives rise to ethics that make a person harmless for others. The entire world is your neighbour. Your next door neighbour is not your only neighbour. One after the other, all are your neighbours. If you have dealings with your neighbour in terms of speaking, actions or behaviour, you have to be good in conduct. He should have a good experience. What is the difference? Your daughter and your neighbour are different persons. Do you love your daughter? Why? By nature, you have love for your daughter. You don’t hate your son or daughter. Your nature compels you to love him or her. But when it comes to your neighbour, you have to activate your mind. You have to think to love your neighbour. But you love your son or daughter without thinking. If you love your son or daughter, that doesn’t constitute a sign of faith. That happens by nature. Animals also love their young ones. Love for your son or daughter doesn’t give you Islamic credit. It is your nature that motivates you to love your son or daughter. You won't get any reward for this. When you do something after proper thought, you will get reward.
